BRANDON – Four youngsters want to do their part to put the squeeze on cancer.
Seven-year-old Ella Nichols, 4-year-old Magnus Nichols, 9-year-old Ryan Hansen, and 7-year-old Braden Hansen will operate a lemonade stand from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Bryan Road and Minuteman Lane to raise money for Alex’s .
When they heard their moms, Angela Nichols and Carol Hansen, discussing the foundation that fights childhood cancers, they wanted to have an Alex’s Lemonade Stand this year.
“All four kids understand that childhood cancer is a frightening disease that could happen to anyone,” Carol Hansen said.
Childhood cancer has touched the Hansens’ extended family.
Ryan and Braden’s cousin, Harrison Biros, son of Mary and Scott Biros of Solon, Ohio, had a Stage III Wilms’ tumor on one of his kidneys when he was 3 months old. The affected kidney was removed and he received chemotherapy and radiation treatments, Hansen said. He is now 3 and cancer free—but must continue to be checked.
Ella, Magnus, Ryan and Braden “feel strongly that no other kids should suffer,” Hansen said. “They are all very kindhearted and amazing children.”
Hansen said the kids have done a lot to prepare for this fundraiser. They have passed out flyers and will appear on the Brooker Elementary Schoolmorning TV show to promote it. They have been involved in all of the decisions and are very excited about fighting childhood cancer.
Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation was created after 4-year-old cancer patient Alexandra “Alex” Scott set up a lemonade stand to raise money to battle children’s cancer. Since its creation the foundation has raised more than $30 million and funded more than 150 research projects. Scott died in 2004.
